The Midlands Province is in central Zimbabwe. It is a commercial, manufacturing, and transport centre situated in a region in which gold, iron ore, chromite, diamonds, and tungsten are mined, and cattle are raised. Manufactured goods include ferroalloys, processed food, footwear, textiles, and building materials. The Midlands Museum here houses displays of military history. Established in 1894, Gweru, one of Zimbabwe’s duties served as a military post for European settlers during the Ndebele (Matabele) revolt of 1896.
